Baek Hak-Young
Abstract
This study analyzes the influence of neighborhood environment on children¡¯s educational attainment and also estimates the pathway of this focusing on the role of parental involvement. Results from this study show that duration of living on public housing, high-poverty area, is negatively associated with educational attainment and this relationship lasts even after controlling individual and family-level variables(household income, family structure, welfare dependence, etc). Also, results from this study prove the relationship between duration of living on public housing and children¡¯s educational attainment which is mediated by the parental involvement. Findings from this study suggest that in tackling educational attainment, one of the critical index of child development, we should consider not only individual and family-level factors but also the role of neighborhood environment. Moreover, we need to develop programs to enhance the level of parental involvement to alleviate the negative influence of high-poverty neighborhood.
